A 66 Word Prayer

I’ve always cherished the “Lord’s Prayer” of Matthew 6:9-13. I’ve memorized it. I’ve recited it. I’ve taught it. But only recently have I prayed this prayer back into my soul by asking some pertinent questions. I hope these questions can assist you as they have for me.

“Our” How can I say, “our” unless I make room in my heart for the company of others?

“Father” How can I say, “Father” unless I have been brought into relationship with God by being born from above such that I can address Him in such fashion?

“Who art in heaven” How can I say, “who art in heaven” unless I grasp the awesome majesty of our God who resides in holy distance from us here on earth?

“Hallowed be Thy name” How can I say, “hallowed be Thy name” unless I make it a point to elevate His name above mine in daily discourse and actions?

“Thy kingdom come” How can I say, “Thy kingdom come” unless I am truly making the managing of my affairs subservient to His?

“Thy will be done” How can I say, “Thy will be done” unless I am willing to let go of my relentless obsessions concerning the unholy trinity of “me, myself and I” ?

“On earth as it is in heaven” How can I say, “on earth as it is in heaven” if I tend to be so heavenly-minded as to be of no earthly good?

“Give us this day our daily bread” How can I say, “Give us this day our daily bread” if I somehow feel that all I have is due to my effort rather than God’s generous provision?

“Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” How can I say, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” unless I am making every effort to be in right relationship with those around me?

“And lead us not into temptation” How can I say, “lead us not into temptation” unless I am truly doing all I can to avoid places, people and substances that entice me to do wrong?

“But deliver us from evil” How can I say, “deliver us from evil” unless I am doing all I can to withstand the snares of the devil and to contend against the schemes of the evil one?

“For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, AMEN” How can I say, “Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, AMEN” if my intention this day is to live only in regard for myself?
